Terms of Service
By creating an account or using Chess Bureau you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the service.
1. What Chess Bureau is
Chess Bureau is a web application that helps chess clubs manage membership, attendance, ratings and tournaments. It is offered as a closed beta: access is by invitation, features may change or be withdrawn, and the service may be interrupted.
2. Accounts
- You need an invitation to create an account during the beta, and you must use the email address that was invited.
- Keep your sign-in details secure and do not share your account. You are responsible for what is done through it.
- Tell us promptly if you think your account has been used without your permission.
3. Clubs, roles and children's information
- A club's owners and administrators control that club's information and who can see or change it.
- If you enter information about another person, you confirm you are entitled to do so. For anyone under the age of majority, that includes having the consent of a parent or guardian to collect and store their information for the club's purposes.
- Keep information accurate and up to date, and only collect what the club needs.
4. Acceptable use
Do not misuse the service. In particular, do not: access another club's information; try to break, probe or overload the service; upload unlawful, abusive or harmful content; use the service to harass or contact children inappropriately; or use it to send unsolicited marketing.
5. Your information
The club and its members keep ownership of the information they put into Chess Bureau. You give us permission to store and process it to provide the service. Our Privacy Policy explains how we handle personal information.
6. Ratings and results
Ratings, pairings and standings are calculated automatically from the results the club enters, using the rules shown in the app. They are provided for club use and are not official ratings of any chess federation. Clubs are responsible for checking results before relying on them.
7. Availability and changes
We aim to keep the service available but do not promise uninterrupted or error-free operation, especially during the beta. We may change, suspend or discontinue features. If we discontinue the service we will give clubs reasonable notice and a way to export their member information.
8. No warranty
The service is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, to the extent permitted by law.
9. Limit of liability
To the extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect or consequential losses, or for lost data, profits or opportunities arising from your use of the service. Our total liability for any claim is limited to the amount you paid us for the service in the previous 12 months, which during the beta is nothing. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law.
10. Suspension and ending
You may stop using Chess Bureau at any time. We may suspend or end access if these terms are broken, if needed to protect the service or other people, or if the beta ends.
11. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. If a change is important we will update the date above and, where appropriate, tell club owners. Continuing to use the service after a change means you accept it.
12. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of British Columbia and the federal laws of Canada that apply there. Disputes will be dealt with by the courts of British Columbia.
